01. AI Increased Activity, Not Performance

One of the biggest misconceptions in modern Sales Teams is that more activity automatically leads to better results. As AI continues to evolve, businesses can now produce more emails, more LinkedIn messages, more follow-ups and more outbound campaigns than ever before. The logic seems simple: if you double your activity, you'll eventually double your opportunities. Unfortunately, business development has never worked that way.

I believe we've reached a point where people see sales as nothing more than a numbers game. The more output you create, the more successful you expect to become. While there is certainly some truth in increasing activity, it's also one of the quickest ways to burn yourself out. It's also one of the quickest ways to abandon a perfectly good product or service because the results never matched the effort. Activity without direction rarely produces sustainable growth.

This is largely because AI has been built around one major advantage: speed. It can complete tasks in seconds that previously took people hours. That's an incredible advantage, and I'm certainly not suggesting speed isn't valuable because it absolutely is. The problem begins when businesses assume that because something happens faster, the outcome must automatically become better. Speed is only valuable when it's being applied to the right process.

Today almost every business has access to AI. That means speed is rapidly becoming a commodity rather than a competitive advantage. The real differentiator isn't how quickly you can contact a prospect. It's how well you qualify that business before you ever begin your outreach. Understanding whether a business genuinely fits your product, recognising the opportunity that exists and identifying the most effective way to approach them will almost always outperform sending hundreds of generic messages to poorly qualified prospects.

Personally, I'd choose 10 to 15 businesses that are 90% aligned over sending 200 AI-generated emails every single day. Why? Because those businesses have already been qualified. They're far more likely to need what I'm offering and therefore far more likely to convert. While someone else is spending hours sending, managing and following up hundreds of low-quality prospects, I've already completed my outreach and have hours available to create content, improve my strategy, develop my business or simply spend more time building stronger customer relationships. To me, that's a far more effective use of time.

This philosophy is exactly why we built Prospexto. Could you qualify businesses using ChatGPT? Yes, you could. Would it take significantly longer? In most cases, yes. Would it consistently provide a structured qualification, identify the opportunity within the business, recommend the most appropriate outreach method and explain exactly how to approach that prospect? Not to the same depth. Prospexto was designed for one purpose: qualifying businesses. Because it's built specifically for that workflow, it analyses businesses more deeply, identifies genuine opportunities, recommends outreach strategies and completes the process significantly faster than a general-purpose AI assistant. Rather than helping you generate more activity, its purpose is to help you spend your time on the businesses that actually matter.

02. Why Speed Was Never The Bottleneck

One of the biggest mistakes businesses make is believing that sales has always been held back by speed. It hasn't. Speed has never been the reason most complex B2B deals are won or lost. You can send another hundred emails, make another fifty calls and automate every stage of your outreach, but none of those activities guarantee you'll win the opportunity.

Think of it this way. AI has given every Sales Team a faster car, but many are still driving on the wrong road. The problem was never how quickly you could reach a prospect. The problem has always been understanding whether that prospect was worth pursuing in the first place. Businesses are simply arriving at the wrong destination much faster than they used to.

I've worked in business development for more than thirty years, and one lesson has remained constant throughout that time. The best sales professionals aren't the people who produce the most activity. They're the people who make the best decisions. They understand their customers, recognise genuine opportunities and know where to invest their time. Those decisions have always produced better results than simply increasing output.

Today there's a huge amount of advice online encouraging sales professionals to increase activity at every opportunity. Send more emails. Make more calls. Contact more businesses. While volume certainly has its place, you shouldn't assume every success story applies to your own business. Every market is different, every customer behaves differently and every salesperson follows a different journey. Building your own process will always outperform blindly copying someone else's.

As AI continues to reduce the cost of activity towards zero, the businesses that mistake activity for progress will simply create more of it. They'll contact more prospects, generate more follow-ups and fill more pipelines without necessarily increasing revenue. The businesses that continue to grow will be those that understand where speed creates value and where human judgement still matters. AI can make you faster, but deciding where that speed should be applied remains one of the most important decisions any Sales Team can make.

03. Qualification Is Becoming The Competitive Advantage

If speed is no longer the competitive advantage, then what is? I believe the answer is simple: qualification. Every sales team now has access to AI. Every business can generate emails, automate follow-ups and build outbound campaigns in minutes. As those capabilities become available to everyone, the businesses that consistently outperform their competitors won't be the ones producing the most activity. They'll be the ones making the best decisions before that activity even begins.

For me, qualification always starts with one question: Is this business investing in growth? It doesn't matter whether you're selling software, packaging, machinery, recruitment, consultancy or marketing services. If a business isn't investing in itself, it's far less likely to invest in what you're offering. Businesses that are actively growing are usually looking for better ideas, better suppliers and better ways to move forward. Those are the conversations every salesperson should be trying to have.

There are hundreds of different growth signals you can analyse, but you don't need to start with hundreds. Five of the strongest indicators are whether a business is recruiting new staff, investing in its website, publishing regular content, adopting new technology and growing its presence on LinkedIn or other social platforms. These aren't the only signals, but they provide an excellent foundation for understanding whether a business is actively moving forward or simply maintaining the status quo.

One area I always pay close attention to is a company's website. Many people assume this only matters if you're selling digital services, but that's completely missing the point. A website is the centre of a business's digital footprint. If they're investing in SEO, improving page speed, refining their calls-to-action and continuously updating their online presence, it tells you they're prepared to invest in growth. If they're unwilling to invest in themselves, there's a strong possibility they'll be reluctant to invest in your solution as well.

This is also where specialist AI begins to separate itself from general AI. Could you use ChatGPT to research a business? Absolutely. Could it help you qualify prospects? Of course. But it isn't designed solely for business qualification, which means you'll spend time writing prompts, interpreting responses and piecing the information together yourself. Even using AI, manually qualifying a single business can easily take 15 to 20 minutes.

That's exactly why we built Prospexto. Its sole purpose is business qualification. Instead of helping you simply generate more outreach, it analyses growth signals, performs deep qualification, identifies opportunities within each prospect, recommends the most appropriate outreach methods and explains how each business should be approached. In the same 15 to 20 minutes it might take to manually qualify one business, Prospexto can fully qualify around fifteen. That's where AI delivers its greatest value—not by creating more activity, but by helping you spend your time on businesses that genuinely deserve it.

Faster Doesn't Win Deals. Better Decisions Do.

Artificial Intelligence has changed sales forever, and that's a positive thing. It allows Sales Teams to automate repetitive work, reduce administration and complete tasks in minutes that once took hours. Businesses should absolutely embrace these technologies because the productivity gains are impossible to ignore.

What AI hasn't changed is the foundation of business development. Businesses still buy from people who understand their challenges, identify genuine opportunities and approach them with relevance and value. As AI continues to make outreach faster and cheaper, those human decisions become even more valuable because the cost of making the wrong decision also becomes much greater.

I believe the future of business development isn't about producing more activity than your competitors. It's about producing better activity. Spending your time qualifying the right businesses, identifying growth signals and focusing your effort on opportunities that are genuinely aligned will always outperform chasing hundreds of prospects that were never likely to buy in the first place.

That's exactly why we built Prospexto. We didn't want another AI tool that simply helped businesses send more emails or automate another task. We wanted to build a platform that helps businesses make better decisions before outreach ever begins. By combining deep business qualification, opportunity analysis and AI-driven outreach recommendations, Prospexto helps sales professionals spend less time guessing and more time speaking to businesses that genuinely matter.

The businesses that will lead the next generation of sales won't necessarily be the fastest. They'll be the ones that know where to apply that speed. Because in business development, faster is just an advantage. Better decisions are what create long-term growth.
